Craftsmanship
At the heart of Atelier Perenne lies a deep reverence for the time-honored traditions of leather craftsmanship. We exclusively employ traditional French techniques, a legacy of meticulous artisanship passed down through generations. Every stage of creation is executed by hand, from the initial pattern cutting and the careful pairing of leather, to the intricate saddle stitching using a linen thread and an awl. We hand-finish and paint every edge using high quality paints and natural waxes, creating a smooth, durable finish that machines cannot replicate.
This deliberate and unhurried process ensures that each stitch is perfectly tensioned, each seam is exceptionally strong, and every piece we create is not just an accessory, but a testament to the enduring quality and soul of true handmade craft.

Frequently asked questions
Why are handmade leather goods considered to be of higher quality?
The superior quality of handmade leather goods lies in the human touch and the time-honored techniques that machines cannot replicate. The most significant difference is in the stitching. We exclusively use the traditional saddle stitch, a method where two needles pass through a single hole at the same time, interlocking a thread with itself. This creates an incredibly strong and durable seam; if one part of the thread were to ever break, the entire stitch would remain intact. In contrast, the lockstitch used by industrial machines creates a chain-like seam that can unravel completely if a single stitch is broken, leading to catastrophic failure.
Beyond the stitch, the entire process of handmade creation speaks to its quality. An artisan can feel subtle variations in the leather, adjusting tension and technique to accommodate the unique character of each hide, ensuring every seam is perfectly placed and every edge is finished with meticulous care. This level of attention to detail, from the careful selection of the strongest part of the hide for high-stress areas to the hand-beveled and burnished edges, results in a piece that is not only stronger but also more beautiful and personal. A handmade good is a testament to skill and patience, built to last a lifetime, whereas a machine-made item is often a product of speed and uniformity, prioritizing quantity over true, lasting quality.
How come your products are so expensive?
First of all, this is a totally understandable question, as our products come at a premium over many other ‘comparable’ brands. However, the products of Perenne are truly handmade in our atelier in Maastricht. This means that very little (if any) machines are involved in the process. Other brands use ‘handmade’ quite liberally, often meaning that a product is moved from one machine to another machine ‘by hand’.
Then the materials that are used are all top notch, from the leather to the hardware. All leathers come from Europe’s foremost tanneries and the hardware from the best producers, including our buckles that come from Mainson Poursin, France’s last producer of handcrafted solid brass hardware.
You are always very welcome to visit the atelier in Maastricht to experience what goes into making your product!
Which leathers do you use?
At Atelier Perenne, our commitment to quality is reflected in our meticulous selection of leathers. We exclusively work with the highest-grade full-grain hides, prized for their durability, strength, and the unique character they develop over time. Our primary choice is vegetable-tanned leather, a centuries-old, eco-conscious process that uses natural tannins from bark and leaves. This method results in a rich, deep color that ages beautifully, developing a unique patina that tells the story of your item’s journey.
In line with our philosophy of respect for nature and craftsmanship, we are deeply committed to ethical sourcing. We only use leathers that are by-products of the meat and dairy industries. This means that no animal is ever killed specifically for its hide; we honor the material by transforming what would otherwise be waste into a cherished, long-lasting object. We source our hides from the best European tanneries (Haas, D’Annonay, Conceria Walpier, Weinheimer, etc) that adhere to strict environmental and animal welfare standards, ensuring that every piece we create is not only a testament to superior quality but also a conscious and responsible choice.
Do you offer products in exotic leathers, such as alligator?
At Atelier Perenne, we do not offer products made from exotic leathers such as alligator, ostrich or python. Our philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for nature and a commitment to ethical and sustainable craftsmanship. While we do utilize leather as a by-product of the meat and dairy industry, we draw a firm line at materials from animals that are bred and killed solely for their skins. The reality of the exotic leather trade is that, in most cases, these animals are raised in intensive farming conditions with the sole purpose of harvesting their hides, a practice that is fundamentally at odds with our values. We choose to honor the beauty and durability of traditional, ethically-sourced bovine leathers, focusing on masterful craftsmanship and timeless design rather than the rarity of a material.
